The Great Santa Debate

Since it’s getting around that time with Christmas and since I have seen a few people discussing this topic, and also since this blog is about “Bringing Up Benjamin”, I decided to say a few words about what we are doing with Benjamin this Christmas. I know there are a lot of people who have been saying {for some time now, I’m sure} that allowing your Children to believe in Santa Claus is a sin because it is a “lie” and all lying is a sin. Now, don’t get me wrong – I do believe that lying is a sin, even what people call a “little white lie” {I still don’t know what that even means}. But what I don’t believe is that allowing your kids to believe in Santa is lying.

If it isn’t lying, what is it? It’s make believe. It’s pretend-play. Right now, Benjamin wouldn’t know the difference between make-believe and reality because those concepts are just too heavy for him. Right now, he thinks that Dora really exists, that Mickey Mouse is alive and kickin’ {after all, he saw him at Disney, didn’t he?}, and that when he hides behind a blanket, we really don’t know where Benjamin went! He pretends to eat fake food, he pretends that Bailey drinks out of his cup, he pretends to read books. On Halloween, we pretended that he was a puppy, and he still likes to pretend to be a puppy. He likes to pretend that Papaw is a horsey and can give him rides. He likes to pretend he is an airplane.

So what’s wrong with pretending that Santa Claus is real?

Was it lying when we said that he was a puppy on Halloween? Is it lying if we say we can’t see where he went when he hides behind his hands? Is there really that fine of a line between pretending and lying?

I don’t think so. We didn’t feel the need to tell Benjamin at Disney that Mickey Mouse wasn’t really Mickey Mouse, he was just a man in a suit. Why? Because it’s make believe. And there is nothing wrong with pretending.

If it hurts your conscience to let your kids believe in Santa, then don’t do it. Benjamin, on the other hand, really likes “Ho-Ho” and we are very excited to pretend about him this year. I know I enjoyed pretending about Santa around Christmastime, and I think Benjamin will too.

A Lot Like Christmas

DSC08755

It has been so cold lately, y’all. I think today was supposedly warmer than it has been but I admittedly did not go outdoors today because my toes are already cold and aren’t getting any warmer! I need some slippers!! I am really glad that we got my coats out of storage earlier this week… better late than never, right?

It’s really starting to feel like Christmas, though… it doesn’t particularly look like a picturesque Christmas at the moment… it’s been really rainy here lately and today it was not cold enough for it to be snow, so basically it’s just cold and wet and yucky. Hey, but at least it can look like Christmas inside! Benjamin was a good sport today when I attempted Holiday photos (though I really didn’t get many that I liked) – especially when I gave him a candy cane!

DSC08753

Isn’t he as cute as a Christmas bug? I could just squish him! Maybe tomorrow I will be able to get better pictures, or at least sometime this weekend.

DSC08775

I hope you all are keeping warm and safe as we enter into the weekend! This week sure did go by fast! I have been looking into furniture and all that good stuff… it feels SO good to know where we’ll be this coming year! The uncertainty of the whole jobless situation and the fact that money doesn’t replenish itself magically was what was really killer and really had me stressed out. I can’t explain (as I said before) how thankful and happy we are! I can’t get over how much God has blessed us, and I want to say to any of you who may be struggling in any way, when God says that He is going to take care of us, He means it. He always follows through with His promises and for that I am so thankful.

I think I’m ready for Christmas!

HE answers prayers!!

It is hard for me to truly express how utterly thankful and excited I have been the past few days. I know that many of you know the outcome of our tryout in Alabama this past weekend, but in case you didn’t hear the news, Carl has a job now! You know the old saying, “Good things come to those who wait”? Well we have waited four months and finally – FINALLY we have somewhere to go! I would go on, I would love to tell you all the details and the ins and outs, but right now, I just don’t have words!

God is SO good, He’s SO good to me!

Thank you to all of you who have been keeping us in your prayers. Please continue to do so as we prepare to move (early January we are thinking) and start our new work in Alabama.

The future is BRIGHT! I can’t wait!

cotton balls, traveling, and my sweet boy

Welcome to the weekend! I’m pooped! I spent a lot of the day packing up stuff for the weekend. We are heading off on another tryout this weekend, this time in Alabama, a little closer to home which is fantastic! I am looking forward to seeing friends that we haven’t seen since March and also making new friends and meeting more of God’s family! What a blessing it is to have people throughout the country and world that are your family even if you have never met them… God’s family is amazing!

I am not really looking forward to the super long drive, which is not super long but long enough to feel super long I am sure. It’s five and a half hours. Soooo not fun. But, I’m going to look at the bigger picture… or at least try to! hehe.

Today I also went to the church building with my mom and we decorated our classroom (she teaches Sundays and I teach Wednesdays). I am just gonna say that I would be happy if I never saw another cotton ball in my life.

attendance

Yep. That took a long time… and my hand was raw from the stapler… but ANYway, all complaining aside, how CUTE is that?! The stickers that go on those sweet little penguins are pretty cute too. They are sparkly snowflakes and who doesn’t like that?!

snowflakes

I also stood on a stepladder and hung up a dozen (or less?) of these snowflakes from hooks on the ceiling. If you know me and know how injury prone I am, you know that this probably was a disaster waiting to happen, but guess what? I did not fall off. I know, I was shocked too!

heroes

And my mom did that one. She is such a great teacher and I love working with her (we did VBS together and I loved it) because I always learn so much about doing classrooms and visual aids and everything like that.

Anyway, that was most of my day. The rest of it was Benjamin being super grumpy because he didn’t get a good nap in. We laid him down for bed around 7:30, which is early for him, and he woke up around 9. I guess he got that nap in! ha! Anyway at 10:15 we told him it was time for bed and he protested until Carl told him, “You need to go to sleep so you can see Reagan tomorrow!” and Benjamin immediately stopped the chorus of “no” and said, “Okay!” and went right to bed. We thought that was funny! :)

I hope y’all have a great weekend!

Benjamin Meets Santa Claus

We did not plan on meeting Santa today. If I had thought of it beforehand, I would have made him wear something a lot cuter than his “TOUCHDOWN” sweatshirt. You know. Something more festive. Something…. Christmas-y. Good thing it was Red. Turns out it didn’t matter what the front of his shirt said because the pictures with the front of his shirt were awful.

Let me explain. In line, he was barely containable because he was so excited. He wanted to get down and he was practicing his smiles and everything (by the way, the smiles he practiced had him jutting out his lower jaw – so funny!). However, he wouldn't even LOOK at Santa and wanted nothing to do with him when we got to him. He absolutely did NOT want to sit in the chair with him. He leaned down and wanted to get down or fall out or just anything to get away. So Santa was good enough to get down on the floor with the candy canes(!) to see if Ben would be happier that way… well, not really. Pretty much every photo besides the one we chose was Benjamin attempting to get far away from Santa. There was one shot where both of them looked pretty frustrated with the situation,  ha! Should have gotten that one printed, right?!

Anyway. The picture:

christmas2010

No, this won’t be our holiday card, if we do send out photo cards (that is, if I get mine free). Sorry Santa, you’re just not making the cut! I’d rather have one with Benjamin smiling. But nice try, anyway. Maybe next year Benjamin will be happier to see the Jolly man in red.

At least he got a candy cane! The most shocking part was when I didn’t swoon at the price… although I sure did feel like it!

‘tudes.

A little bit about myself: I sometimes have a ‘tude problem.

It’s something that lately I have been trying so very hard to control and oh wow, it is so difficult sometimes! You know that saying you sometimes see on church signs along the road, “Too Blessed to be Stressed”? I would so love to say that this is my attitude all the time, but you know what? It isn’t. I SO wish I had zero stress. Even in tough situations, I know that the situations could be tougher. And yet I allow stress to seep into my life and it is so debilitating at times.

Attitudes can really, really mess up your day. They set the mood for entire families, sometimes. I notice that when I am feeling more irritable, so is Benjamin and sometimes, so is Carl. It makes it harder not to go at someone’s throat at the smallest thing.

I’m not the only one who has been struggling with attitudes lately, though. I was reminded today that next month someone in particular is turning two and I think Benjamin is feeling this as well. I used to think that terrible two’s were a myth, and perhaps they aren’t as terrible for one person as they are the next, but Benjamin is starting to push his boundaries. The word “No” is said like a bajillion times a day, and each and every time I just want to pull my hair out. There, I said it. I admit that lately I have really felt like I was literally going crazy. I am clinging desperately to any shred of sanity I may have left on some days!

I know I’m not the only mother who has ever felt this way. I know that this sort of craziness is not new! This all being wrapped up with the current stresses of being jobless and living with parents and money not magically replenishing itself in the bank account (what is UP with that?!) is just ---- ahhh, it’s driving me nuts!

Most days, I definitely need an attitude check.

Check one: Job. I am sure you all probably know the account of Job in the Old Testament about how he lost everything besides his own life and the life of his wife and friends. His children, his livestock, his livelihood, everything… gone.

Check two: Paul the Apostle. “Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.” 2 Corinthians 11:25-27 – I think that speaks for itself right there.

Check three: the most important check of all: Jesus Christ our Lord, who carried MY burden to calvary and died on the cross for ME. What more can I say???

I know that we are all allowed our times of emotions, but whenever it gets out of hand, whenever my attitude is way out of line, I do those checks, and sometimes more. Today when we took the car through a car wash and then had water pour on top of me from the overhead light, I at first felt like SNAPPING because of the car dealership and stuff I won’t get into – but then I reminded myself that it could be worse. There are people in other countries who would gladly take a car that was barely running – what right do I have to complain? There are people who find bicycles a precious commodity and a rarity – what right do I have to complain about a little water?

I come to find that my attitude problems often come from things in my life blown way out of proportion. Benjamin entering the “terrible two’s”? Not as big a deal as I sometimes make it out to be. It’s natural, and with time he will catch on to how it all works out in our family. It’s all a learning process.

So I’m learning. I have such a patient husband who is not only patient with Benjamin, but patient with ME! and sometimes I know I’m worse than terrible two’s! I’m learning, and prayerfully. And trying to make that also joyfully.

DSC08693

Just for a little levity (and to draw attention away from the snot on my son’s face), today in an attempt to divert Benjamin from a terrible two’s moment, I made him two coloring books (one a Bible book and one a Christmas book). He was SO excited. So I went off to make the bed and came back in to find him merrily coloring away, laying on his belly. He looked up at me and said, “Mama!” and grinned at me. I said, “Hi Ben! Are you having a good time?” He smiled cheekily and said, “No!” with all the cheerfulness in the world. I laughed. “I’m sorry to hear that.” I said. I love him dearly. I did tell you “No” was the most frequent word out of his mouth. But sometimes he can say it in the cutest of ways that it certainly cannot drive me crazy.

Blessings

The Paper Mama has another challenge up themed “Blessings”. I didn’t take any pictures of Benjamin this Thanksgiving (I know – shocking!) so I was going to share a different picture that I feel falls into the category of “Blessings”.

DSC08428

I love this picture of my dad and Benjamin playing in the leaves. I am surrounded by so many blessings, and I know most of you know that we are currently living with my parents while Carl is out of work. It has been such a blessing to have such wonderful parents who have taken care of us when we needed it most. They have really been amazing. God blessed me when He gave me parents like them!

I love that Benjamin can spend so much time with his Nana and Papaw. Three and a half years ago my own Papaw passed away and it reminded me how important it is to spend time with your family. It has been a blessing watching Benjamin bond with my parents. They are phenomenal.

It’s a blessing for so many reasons. We don’t know how much longer we will be here with my parents. When we move, we will be moving at least 6 hours away, if we move to any of the 3 places we think we may move to. These moments are so precious… every smile and hug and laugh and kiss… it is all precious.

That’s why this picture of Benjamin playing in his first leaf pile with his Papaw is precious, and a blessing.

Praise GOD from whom ALL blessings flow!!
