Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:26

Far Above Rubies

I missed it again last week, I am so sorry! This week is going to be crazy but I am going to take some time this morning to do this study and then dive into my week. I have to finish up packing SOON! We move Thursday or Friday {preferably Friday}. But this is a really nice way to start out my day. I hope you all decide to join in too! We will be looking at Proverbs 31:26 this week.

"She openeth her mouth with wisdom;
and in her tongue is the law of kindness."
- Proverbs 31:26

This virtuous woman not only takes care of all her household duties {and then some!} but she is also counted on for wise counsel of others. She is kind toward others. This is the kind of woman you know you can go to and you won't feel like she's going to turn around and badmouth you, if you know what I mean!

The tongue is a really hard thing to tame. You can read the book of James and find that out quickly! It is so easy to let things just slip off, and I know that I am guilty from time to time! The Virtuous woman is not a slanderer, a back-biter, a gossiper, or even a nagger to her husband and others! All such things are very destructive!! People who you know have tendencies to gossip or who don't put into action the law of kindness are not people who you go to for wise counsel. This virtuous woman IS someone you can go to, though!

I wonder if this virtuous woman ever prayed the prayer the psalmist did in Psalm 17:3 -
"Though you probe my heart and examine me at night,
though you test me, you will find nothing;
I have resolved that my mouth will not sin."

We should always strive to be like the virtuous woman, who can be depended upon and can be confided in without worry - we need to resolve not to sin with our mouths!

I can't wait to read your thoughts on this! I hope you all have a great week and strive to keep a law of kindness on your tongue!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:25

Far Above Rubies

First of all, I am so sorry I have been so slack concerning this series! We are nearing the end of it and I have still been very bad at doing this. Things are so hectic around here, but that shouldn't keep me from taking time out to do Far Above Rubies! I am trying to do better, so bear with me! My sweet friend Kara told me how much she had been missing it and it has inspired me to do it before I get busy come tomorrow. Thank you, Kara, for reminding me that this isn't only for me!

This week we will be looking at Proverbs 31:25.

"Strength and honour are her clothing;
and she shall rejoice in time to come."
- Proverbs 31:25

It is apparent that this first part about her clothing being strength and honour is speaking figuratively about this virtuous woman. This is a meaningful verse to me especially in these difficult times that we have been facing recently. This woman "wears clothing" of strength and honour, because she has no reason not to be able to do so. She doesn't have to worry or fret. She can be confident in what lies ahead because "she shall rejoice in time to come."

How does she know this? Because she is a godly woman and those who serve the Lord will be blessed! Here are a few verses that go along with that - and one of my favorites (Matthew 6:33) is included!

1) Psalms 37:25: "I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread."
2) Psalms 112:7: "He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD."
3) Matthew 6:33: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
4) Hebrews 13:5-6: "Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me."

Hebrews 13:5-6 ... wow. Just reading that right now, when I feel like giving up from time to time, that verse really touches me. It literally brings tears to my eyes. What an awesome God we serve, am I right?! God will NOT forsake me!

In fact, where in the Bible have we ever read about God forsaking man?! Nowhere! Man has always been the one forsaking God - God has always been where He will always be!

The virtuous woman wore clothing of strength and honour and it was evident that she could boldly say, "The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me."

I don't know about you all, but this study couldn't have come at a better time for me and I am so thankful that I took the time to sit down and do this. I hope you all enjoyed this and can jump in with comments or your own blog posts!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:24

Far Above Rubies

"She maketh fine linen, and selleth it;
and delivereth girdles unto the merchant."
- Proverbs 31:24

We have already discussed before how the virtuous woman is willing to work with her hands. This verse discusses how she somehow finds the energy and time to make these fine linens, and then even has some left over to sell! She is interested in expanding the family's income and helping to provide for her family!

There are a lot of people out there who are not willing to work to help their families. While I don't mean you have to be a working mother {I certainly do not plan on being a 'working' mom}, that doesn't mean you can't keep your family in mind and do what you can to make extra money where you can. What sort of talents do you have? There are a lot of places you can sell your goods online!

What I have a hard time with is finding the time to do everything! Time management especially with a little one can sometimes be hard, but this virtuous woman does it!

I'm sorry I don't have more to say on this subject! I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:23

Far Above Rubies

"Her husband is known in the gates,
when he sitteth among the elders of the land."
Proverbs 31:23

This verse seems to be more about to whom the Virtuous Woman is married. Is she married to a man who is lazy and good-for-nothing? This verse says that she is not! He was a prominent, well-respected man. Back in this time, legal actions were not handled at a court house, but at the city gates {Ruth 4:11; Deuteronomy 25:5-10}. The fact that her husband is known in the gates and sits among the elders speaks a lot for him because that means he is not one of questionable repute. He is a good and honorable man.

To those who are yet unmarried, this can help you see what sort of man you might be looking for. A virtuous woman would not seek out a spouse who is of questionable repute, who would not be trusted by prominent leaders of the community. An honest, honorable man is what you should look for, and most of all one that is Spiritually Noble. One who will help you on your way to heaven.

For us women, it may not seem like it says much, but it does. If our husbands are well-known and well-respected, we should be as well. As a preacher's wife, my husband is well-known in the community {especially with his weekly column in the newspaper}, and my behavior should be that which would not bring shame to him or hurt his reputation or influence in any way, shape, or form. This means in tough situations, I am to always keep a Christian attitude.

And that goes for how we behave Online as well, since we all know that the Internet creates an entirely new community and can really influence a lot of people out there. What we say on Facebook or even our Blogs can really hurt the reputation and influence of our husbands, not to mention ourselves.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the matter! I know a lot of you are busy and can't quite make it to the computer a lot. This summer has been a busy one! But I do look forward to hearing the remarks of those who can get around to it!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:30

Far Above Rubies

"She maketh herself coverings of tapestry;
her clothing is silk and purple."
Proverbs 31:22

From my readings I have gathered that this verse is here to show the Virtuous Woman's fine taste and her efforts to really please the eye of her husband. This woman not only works outside, but she works inside by making these types of things. "Jack of All Trades" comes to mind. While these days it is oftentimes more cost-effective to buy from stores, we still should be willing to work with our hands when the need arises.

"Her clothing is silk and purple" - her family was not poor it seems. She is wearing fine clothing and I'm going to go ahead and assume she takes care of herself. I don't think silk and purple equates to sweats and t-shirt... of which I am definitely guilty! I don't know about you all but I sometimes just get lazy and throw on whatever I can find without much of a thought. Of course, I don't think there is anything wrong with this, but I also think I should be putting more of an effort to look nice for my husband. I know I didn't go around looking like a slob when we were "courting".

It doesn't take much to "let yourself go", so to speak. Now I'm not saying I look horrible day in and day out but I could do better. I think when you take care of your appearance and take care for what you put on in the morning, you feel better about yourself. And I know that one of the ways the devil really gets to us women is by picking at our self-esteem. There are too many Christian women out there who suffer from low self-esteem and I am here to say this: THAT IS THE DEVIL! The devil loves to tear us down. He loves to make us feel inferior and make us "covet" after the body types or the clothing of those around us. He gets in and so severely attacks our self-esteem that it is all we can think about. We become more focused on Earthly things like perhaps our clothing or our weight or different aspects of our appearance, instead of focusing on Spiritual things. There are so many people out there who put so much effort into these worldly things that they forget what is truly the most important thing for us to make sure is pure and beautiful: our souls.

Now I say this because while yes, you should put forth an effort into how you look {at least those of us who have husbands need to realize we don't need to jip them! ha!}, but there is an extreme you can go to and that is putting too much thought into it. We don't need to spend so much time on our appearance and end up jipping ourselves out on true beauty, Spiritual beauty.

Any husband who wishes to have this virtuous wife I am sure would rather have a spiritually beautiful woman than an outwardly beautiful woman. In fact, if you read on in Proverbs you'll eventually get to this verse:

"Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain:
but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised."
Proverbs 31:30

I will save my thoughts on that verse for when we get to it, but I felt like it tied in to what I was saying before.

I hope you ladies have been able to understand what I've been trying to say here. I feel like it is all jumbled up and incoherent. If it is - I am so sorry! I am very interested in your thoughts on the subject!

Oh, by the way. I was thinking about what I was going to say on this verse while I was showering, and I made sure to make myself look nice before I sat down and wrote this. How terrible would it have been for me to go on about looking nice for your husband and sit here in my slob garb! Ha!

Y'all have a great week!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:21

Far Above Rubies

Did you guys miss this? Because I sure did! I hope you all got caught up while you could because we are diving right in! {I know some of you are traveling to the States, and are preparing for a Wedding, so I understand!!} This week we are going to be looking at Proverbs 31:21.

"She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet."
- Proverbs 31:21

The word "scarlet" here actually refers to "double-clothing" - which refers to warm clothing. This virtuous woman is not afraid of inclement weather because she is prepared! A lot of these verses are really focused on the efforts that the woman puts into her family. One of these efforts seems to also be preparing for the future.

This also shows how much thought she really puts into her family. Not only the fact that she is prepared, but you have to think... to not have to worry about certain things because you are prepared, you really have to care about and love your family. Sometimes it does come easy for women because we are naturally nurturers.

What kind of things helps you to be prepared for your family? Not only with things such as preparing for the weather, but other things. We try to stockpile when we can. This goes along with couponing. There are some things we are good on for a while, which is comforting. In certain situations we will be prepared. I am sure there are other things we can be prepared for - so do you have any tips?

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:20

Far Above Rubies

We are going to be looking at Proverbs 31:20 for our study this week. I am so glad those of you who are joining have decided to join, especially for those of you who keep coming back - I appreciate that! For all newcomers, I am SO glad you decided to pop over and I really hope you benefit from this study! I know it has been such a blessing to me. Not only have I learned a lot and learned what I need to change in myself, I have met a lot of new friends this way! I encourage you all to visit each other if possible!

---------

"She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy." Proverbs 31:20

This verse alone provokes so many thoughts for me! First of all, what a compassionate woman! She stretches out her hands to those who are less fortunate, who are in need, who really need her help! It doesn't say that they ask for it, perhaps they do, or perhaps she does it on her own accord because that's what a compassionate woman does!

It also made me think of this verse:

"As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith." Galatians 6:10

A virtuous woman seems to fit this bill as well. It makes me wonder how many people out there have been in need and yet I haven't been willing to stretch out my hand to them for whatever reason. I need to be more aware of the people around me and be willing and eager to help them.

If you are faced with the opportunity to help someone - whether it be by giving them a hot meal, a ride to wherever they are going, carrying their groceries for them, or even holding the door for someone going into a place after you, better yet, before you! - do you take those opportunities? Do you look for those opportunities? I think about Christ, who wasn't the richest man by far, and yet He still reached His own hand out to others. He even washed His disciples feet!

My lovely friend Stephanie has a blog that I thought about here as well, The 100 Days of Kindness Project. I love the idea of going out of your way to do something kind for someone - but how often do I live that idea?

I have come to realize this: there is always someone in need. There will always be someone in need. And if I want to be that virtuous woman, I need to be eager to stretch out my hand to those in need!

I am eager to hear your thoughts on this verse! I really enjoyed it - and I look forward to reading your comments or your posts! What a great thought to start out the week, right? Maybe this week we should make it a goal to look for those opportunities to help!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:19

Sorry for the delay, y'all! A big storm on Saturday seemed to have knocked out our internet so I haven't had the time to post!

Far Above Rubies

"She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff." Proverbs 31:19

This verse, I wasn't entirely sure if I knew what a couple of the words meant {though I had a pretty good idea}. I checked out E.M. Zerr's commentary on this verse and that cleared it up for me. This is what he had to say on this verse {it's very short and to the point!}:

"Spindle and distaff are parts of the spinning machine that is used in making yarn from flax and wool to be woven into fabrics for clothing."

Verse 13 of the same chapter, if you remember, told us that she seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. So in this verse we see that she in fact does take what she has sought out and uses it! You can also see in Verse 24 what she does after that - it's a whole process and she takes it from beginning to end and in the end makes a profit from what she's done.

She's useful. While most of us don't have the ability to go out and get raw materials and turn it into yarn, etc... we can still be useful. We can work with our hands to save money and to make money. More than that, though, we can work with our hands from beginning to end in God's kingdom. There are a lot of lazy women out there and a lot of lazy Christians. If this same virtuous woman were in the church today do you think she would be idle in the Lord's kingdom? It's easy to let the "willing" go out and do the work - but we should be the willing, shouldn't we? It's easy to just let other people go out and take care of God's vineyards, but we are all commanded to be workers for the Lord.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the subject!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:18

Far Above Rubies

I just want to first start out saying thank you to all of you ladies who have decided to join in each week to study God's word. I know there are probably some people out there who think they have better things to do with their time, then taking a few minutes out of their day to sit down, read a scripture, and discuss it with other women out there who may need encouragement on the subject. I know I need encouragement daily when it comes to being a virtuous woman. Thank you so much for joining in!!

If this is your first time over, WELCOME! I can't tell you how excited I get when new people come over to join us in these discussions! If you're just lurking about, please don't feel shy and jump right in the discussions! We would love to hear from you!!

Let's get down to it:

We've already seen before that this virtuous woman is not lazy. We've already seen that she not only makes clothing for her family, cooks food for her family, and even takes part in purchasing land. She's very busy. She's always working with her hands!

This verse, the first part of it, says to me that with all she has to do, she doesn't do it half way. She doesn't settle for less than the best. She doesn't do an "okay" job on what she does. She sees that her merchandise is good. It reminds me how in Genesis 1, we see that God saw that His work was good. This speaks volumes about the effort that this woman puts into her work for her family!

The second part, "her candle goeth not out by night". How many times do I say, "I'm just too tired to do this..."? Well, I can tell you it's a lot more often than it should ever be. This virtuous woman works well into the night. She has a job to do and she gets it done, and that is how I should be as well. If you look back and connect this - she works well into the night, and she still sees that her merchandise is good.

Wow... if you're like me, you're seeing a lot in your life that you're wanting to change so you can be a virtuous woman like this woman! I have a lot of work to do!

I would love to hear your thoughts on this verse! Please don't hesitate to share your thoughts in the comments! If you'd like to write your own post on this, do so! Y'all have a blessed week!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:17

Far Above Rubies

Okay y'all are going to think I have lost my mind but I seriously did not realize until Lisa said something on my facebook that today is Monday! I am so sorry for being behind! Usually I have Mariah on Mondays but not today - so that has played a part in my absent-mindedness. And then I'm just absent-minded sometimes! Ha!

"She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms." - Proverbs 31:17

This Virtuous Woman is not afraid of work. She's not afraid to get down and do the work, and by doing so she makes herself stronger. She's not weak and she doesn't feel the need to be liberated from her work because she readies herself {by girding herself} and she strengthens herself in her work!

This woman works hard for her family! And this doesn't necessarily mean that she works out of the house to provide for her family. We all probably know that there is a lot of work that goes into running a house. This Virtuous woman is prime example because she works hard for her family and gets things done. And I'm going to be honest with you and let you know that I have laundry piled up in my laundry room that needs to be folded, and I have bathrooms that need to be cleaned! It's hard work but it has to be done - and it's got to be done soon. Sometimes I feel discouraged and feel like I need to be liberated, but I need to be more like this virtuous woman. I need to get myself ready for what needs to be done and I need to do it!

I remember being told by someone close to me that a young woman in her family held the belief that a Stay-At-Home-Mother was a waste of life. And do you want to know something as equally if not more shocking than that statement? This young woman {who is now a mother} is a Christian! Or claims to be anyway!

Do you think that this woman that we have been studying about these past few weeks can be described as a waste of life? Don't you think that all of her duties and work really speak to what we do or should be doing daily?

It's discouraging to think that someone can consider being a SAHM a waste of life - especially if you get bogged down from time to time in all the work it takes to be a SAHM. But rest assured if you go about your business the way this Virtuous Woman does - you are NOT a waste of life! You are a strong woman! You are blessed!

I know this is sort of unorganized and incoherent, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter! And if you have a moment, how about we all leave some encouraging comments for one another because we all know that we can use some! Thank you all so much for your patience with my absent-mindedness! I know this is kind of a quickie but I've realized that I have some work to do so I better get to it!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:16

Far Above Rubies

I know I threw some of you for a loop last week with doing three verses instead of one, and I apologize for the lack of warning! This week we are only looking at one verse, though.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This week we're going to look at how this verse applies to us becoming virtuous women.

One important thing that stuck out to me was that the woman is involved. She is involved in going out, considering the land that is for sale, and making that purchase for the betterment of her family. She then goes out and plants a vineyard! This woman is not a lazy woman! She is very active in taking care of her family, just as her husband should be!

I read this commentary by Adam Clark, and I thought it was very good and wanted to share with you:

Pro 31:16
She considereth a field and buyeth it -
5. She provides for the growing wants of her family. More land will shortly be needed, for the family is growing up; and having seen a field contiguous to her own, which was on sale, she estimates its worth, and purchases it a good bargain; and she pays for it by the fruit of her own industry.
6. She does not restrict herself to the bare necessaries of life; she is able to procure some of its comforts. She plants a vineyard, that she may have wine for a beverage, for medicine, and for sacrifice. This also is procured of her own labor. Whatever goes out brings its worth in; and barter, not buying, is her chief mode of traffic.

This to me goes all the way back to what I was initially saying about this section of passages, that the wife should be empowered by such scripture! We women can be providers, and do well at what we do!

Right off the bat I had to think about what a handful of friends and I do called "couponing" - maybe you do it too! Couponing these days {if you're unfamiliar with it} isn't just using coupons when you go shopping - it's taking time to hunt and gather all these coupons, and then try and figure out the best ways you can save your money while still going out and getting things that you need. A lot of the time you can get stuff free - or even have the stores literally pay you to take merchandise from their stores!

A lot of this is time consuming, but it's so worth it! And I know a lot of people look at all the loot that people get for mere pennies and say, "What are you going to do with all that?" - but think of this virtuous woman - she is thinking of the future with her purchase. A lot of this stuff doesn't have expiration dates. If you can make stockpiles of stuff that you use daily and only spend mere pennies on it - why wouldn't you?!

These verses all tie in so well together. It's obvious that the husband's heart would have to trust infinitely in his wife for her to be able to make such a purchase as this field! It's an investment in their family and their family's future. It doesn't sound like she's being selfish in these verses, either. Look at her focus here: she is all about her family.

I can't wait to read what all of you thought about this verse! Thanks as always for joining in!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:13-15

Far Above Rubies

This week we are going to do something different. I know we originally said one verse per week, but this week we are going to look at Proverbs 31:13-15. I hope that's okay! I mean, I don't know too many people who should give a fuss about looking at 3 verses instead of 1! ha!

I'm going to apologize for any incoherence today. I have had a really great weekend, but I'm very tired, too. Anyway, let's get down to it:

"She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands" - in the time that these words were penned, a woman would not only sew her own clothing, but she would make the cloth that she was going to work with. I do not believe that the Bible is outdated, but I do know that times in that sense have changed. However, the principle in my mind remains. This woman is doing this work to make sure her family is provided for with clothing, and she is doing so willingly. That doesn't mean if you don't sit down with a sewing machine and make your own clothes that you're sinning. But we should always be willing to go to great lengths to make sure our families are cared for!

"She is like the merchants ships, she bringeth her food from afar" - Can you see why we're looking at these all together? It's obvious how these all tie in. A virtuous woman is going to be willing to go to all lengths to supply food for her family.

"She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens." - Again, she's going to go to great lengths to provide for her family, and this also shows how she is generous with those other than her family.

I think that "great lengths" is something that the world gets mixed up sometimes. Sometimes they think that to provide all of this means they need to get out and have both parents working full-time to bring in big bucks and fill a savings account at the same time. I am not saying it's wrong for both parents to work if it is necessary, because sometimes it is. But this isn't the going to great lengths that I thought about when I read this.

Having a family and being a parent and spouse means sacrifice. It means sometimes you have to stretch and stretch every penny and give up that pedicure or whatever extra you're receiving while the rest of your family may sit on the back burner. Extra things are nice - but they should be extra. Sacrifice means being selfless, not selfish. Thinking of one's family above self. Focusing one what she can do for her family instead of what she can do for herself.

Sometimes, a bit of relaxation and maybe even a splurge is nice and wonderful. I'm not saying that's wrong. I just this past weekend took a vacation with my son and parents, and had a wonderful time doing so. So I'm not saying you can't take time to yourself.

But to me, the virtuous woman is painted as being selfless, sacrificing.

I am sorry I don't have more thoughts to share... I have had a headache for a while now! What are your thoughts on the subject?

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:12

Far Above Rubies

Let me just start off by telling you all how blessed I have been by this study so far. Where I am right now there are very few women who do get together for ladies' study. Back when we were at Memphis while my husband was studying to expand his knowledge so he could go out and preach God's word, we had ladies' class every Monday night. So it was a big change going from weekly, to monthly if that. This has been so encouraging to me. I really can't tell you all exactly how I feel about this segment here... it means a lot to me that you all are joining in here.

Moving on!

These verses {I mean the verses we've already discussed} keep building up, don't they? First we talked about being a virtuous wife, and we've been building on that with being a wife that earns and keeps her husband's trust.

This verse, I feel, just builds even more off of that. Our husbands should be able to trust us, because we will only do good to him, and not evil, all the days of our lives.

That seems like an easy thing to say. Good only, no evil.

A wife needs to be an asset to her husband, which means, she would be of value to him. Specifically with these verses, her value would be far above rubies! She won't be a disadvantage to him. She won't add sorrow to his life, but joy, by her actions and behavior.

This is a constant thing. And there are so many ways we can do good to our husbands to add value to his life. For instance, if your husband works really hard during the day, perhaps it would add value to his life that after he is finished with his work {probably for most of you he would work away from home, so if he came home after work---}, he wouldn't have to worry about doing a lot of the stuff around the house. It would already be done, as a way to thank him for caring for you. Make him feel appreciated by showing him how much he means to you. It will make him feel loved and in turn he will see you as being valuable to him.

Be good to him. Don't pick fights or hold grudges. Don't start the blame game. Marriage is not always easy but it should never be a battle field.

The second part of the verse, "all the days of her life" are very important here, too. It seems like a very simple phrase, but just look at it. ALL the days. Marriage from the very beginning was meant for two people.

A husband and wife are supposed to become one flesh, inseparable! If your body was ever split in half, don't you think that would be painful? And shouldn't that be how it is when we are apart from our spouse? This coming weekend, Benjamin and I are going to be out of state, away from my husband. And while we are going to be with family, and we are going to probably have a lot of fun, it's going to be very painful being away from my husband for even three days. There are some couples who actually take separate vacations from each other! How can they do this?! Doesn't it pain them?

Actually someone told me once of someone they worked with who gave his wife two cruise tickets for Christmas or something like that, and she immediately thought of friends who could go with her. When her friend told her she couldn't go, the wife grudgingly told her husband that he could go.

Do you think that wife adds much value to this man's life? I think not. Would it surprise you if I told you that the couple recently split?

That's a big thing today now, though. Divorce. Nobody really likes to talk about it from a religious point of view, and I can leave that open for discussion in comments if you'd like. But isn't it sad that the rate of divorce in America is close to 50%? And with the way that people treat their marriages so lightly and nonchalantly, I am sure the rate is only climbing in the future!

Marriage is a divine institution that God placed even in the very beginning! How do you think God feels when He sees that so many people are just throwing aside this divine institution that He created for us?

A virtuous wife is one that honors the wedding vows. She is one who intends to be joined to her husband for life. When the going gets tough, she puts 110% effort into making things better, and to have a marriage that is pleasing to God.

{I want to be clear here, because I do have friends who have suffered divorces: I know that the ideal scenarios don't always play out. I understand this. What I am trying to say is my thoughts on the subject, that a wife has the duty to put as much effort as she can into saving a marriage that seems to be in danger. This effort is not always met. We all know that marriage is a partnership, and when one falls out, then the partnership is torn. I mourn marriages that end in divorce, for all who are involved, especially if the couple have children.}

A virtuous wife is going to be good to her husband in each and every way all the days of her life. What are your thoughts on this? I haven't even been married for 3 years ... all the days of my life haven't passed yet {though, we have no idea how long our lives will be}!

As always, thank you for your discussion and posts if you plan on making them! I look forward to reading all of your thoughts!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:11

Far Above Rubies

I enjoyed last week's discussion SO much! I hope you all did as well! I am so glad that you all had no reservations about sharing your thoughts on Proverbs 31:10! If you're new to the study, you can read through last week's study here. Here's the skinny: Far Above Rubies is a ladies' study where we take one verse per week and discuss how we can apply it to the way we are living our lives as Christians.

This week we are going to look at Proverbs 31:11.

I love how these verses hold so much in them, and how timeless they are, don't you? There are so many people who think that the Bible is outdated, but I seriously beg to differ. It seems to me that wives today are just like wives back then. I don't know how many of you know this, but I am a gigantic I Love Lucy fan. My kitchen begs to be decorated in Lucy decor, and I have seen every single episode there is, in fact, I own them all. Anyway, I don't mean to turn that into a discussion of Lucy. But if you've ever seen a show, every other one has to do with Lucy buying something and having to hide it because it cost waaaaay too much. Ricky always comes in ("Luuuucy, I'm hooo-ooome!"), and notices her odd behavior, and then asks how much it cost ("You've got some 'splainin to do...").

This verse to me says that this is not a trait of a virtuous wife. This verse says that the heart of her husband safely trusts in her and is never worried about her going out and spending his paycheck. She is financially trustworthy. He doesn't come home and wonder about how much money she's spent and whether or not they'll be able to pay the bills that month because she's gone out and bought a new wardrobe.

I guess the question we need to ask ourselves is this: does my husband trust me? Am I trustworthy when it comes to what I spend?

For me, I believe that I am. And I don't say this to boast. I feel physically ill when I go to spend anything, especially if I am paying full price. Is anyone else like that? I hope that my husband fully trusts in me. I don't ever want to give him a reason not to. I want to be that virtuous woman!

What are your thoughts on the matter? Last week we had a good number of posts on the subject! I was so excited to read everyone else's thoughts in the comments and on their own blogs! Thank you everyone for joining in! I am going to put a Linky up so you can all link your own blog posts. I can't wait for the discussion!

Far Above Rubies: Proverbs 31:10

Far Above Rubies

I am so excited to start this segment on my blog. For all of you women who are joining in this study, thank you so much! I really hope that we can all grow as Christian women through this study. For those of you who are new to my blog, I am very honored that you have come over. We are going to take one verse per week focusing on being the Christian women that God wants us to be. I will post the verse, and my own thoughts on the verse. The comments will be open for discussion and I hope that we can all discuss and grow together! Please join in on the discussion! And if you have a blog and would like to make your own post with your thoughts on the verse of the week, please do so! If you do this, say so in the comments and I will put up links of those who post! If enough people do this, I'll put up a MckLinky next time. :)

Anyway, let's get started!

The first thing that struck me when I read this verse was this: A virtuous wife is not common, or else her worth would not be so much. This was true back when the words were written, and I fully believe that this is true now! Things that are less common have more worth, while in contrast things which are more common have less worth - that's where the term "cheap as dirt" came from.

This is what Merriam-Webster had to say about the word "Virtuous":

1 : potent, efficacious
2 a : having or exhibiting virtue b : morally excellent : righteous {a virtuous decision}
3 : chaste
synonyms see moral
— vir·tu·ous·ly adverb
— vir·tu·ous·ness noun

I love this word virtuous because I feel like it just blankets all that a Christian should be. Morally excellent... someone who believes and LIVES morally. In all aspects. It makes me think about what sort of word people may associate with me as a Christian. I really, really would love to be called virtuous.

Reading this verse reminded me about how so many people like to say that the Bible oppresses women or puts the as being inferior - this verse says the complete opposite! It is very apparent that a godly woman is very precious, to treasure - a godly woman has worth beyond measure! If anything, the Bible should be empowering to women - especially empowering them to strive to be godly, virtuous women. When I read this, it doesn't make me feel like God or man {as in gender, not mankind} is trying to pull me under or oppress me. It makes me really want to be that virtuous woman, so my husband can say, "I found her, the virtuous woman! I am the richest man on the earth!"

How do you think we can become more virtuous, as Christian women? What are your thoughts on this verse? Let's discuss it!

For her worth is far above rubies.

It takes me a while to get to sleep at night anymore. Ever since I got sick over a week ago, I just haven't been able to sleep well. Let me tell you, I have tried to get more rest. In fact, there were a couple nights when I had taken two Tylenol PM's, and still woke up nearly every hour. That is unheard of! Usually just one would knock me out! It's a combination with the congestion {which is nearly gone, hooray!}, the coughing {which is subsiding, hooray!}, and the ringing that fills my head... all... day... long.

Anyway, last night I was pooped. I took a Tylenol PM, just one so I could wake up in the morning, and went to bed, sure that in a matter of minutes I would be off to dreamland. Well, I wasn't. I don't know how long I laid there. I know that I smelled popcorn and I'm not sure if that was my husband or my brother-in-law {who is visiting for the weekend}, but I distinctly remember being grossed-out. I hate the smell of microwaved popcorn.

I do pretty good thinking while I'm trying to go to sleep. I come up with pretty good ideas and think about probably everything. I do a lot of praying while I'm trying to go to sleep. I do a lot of self-searching and reflecting while I'm trying to go to sleep.

So last night I was thinking about my Bible class. I'm starting to put together a new class for Benjamin and the other little boy who comes occasionally. It's on prayer, and we're going to just look at all the different things that we pray about {in hopes to establish at least an understanding that when we pray, we are quiet and reverent}.

I was thinking about the different things we can pray for, for our families, and to thank God for our food and for the Bible. I was thinking about the different songs we could sing during class...

And then I thought about the song, "Read your Bible, Pray every day..."

I sing that one to Benjamin a lot. But sometimes I don't do too well with carrying through with what I'm trying to instill in Benjamin, and that isn't right.

So I'm starting a study. I am going to take one verse per week, memorize it, study it, think about it, meditate on it, pray about it. All week. Just one verse. My topic of study is something I know I will benefit from: How to be a godly woman.

I'm inviting you all to join in this study with me. I know that sometimes being a mommy or even just a wife comes with so many responsibilities that we sometimes forget to slow down and give attention to our Creator. I am really ashamed to admit that I sometimes allow other things in before my God. Matthew 6:33 says, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." - I want to be taken care of, so I need to put God first.

That means that other areas of my life won't be as active. I never, ever devote complete days to one activity, unless it is something Spiritual. I never, ever devote a complete day to cleaning my house, because for one thing cleaning would take too much out of me to really give any attention to anything else, and another, if I'm cleaning all day, where am I devoting time to God? Is my house becoming my idol?

When I plan my day, what do I center it around? If it isn't centered around God, then there is a problem. Even if it is my job to take care of my son and my house and my family with my various responsibilities, if my center is not God, nothing else matters. God needs to be my hub, and every other aspect needs to be the spokes of my wheel. Just because my husband is a preacher doesn't mean I'm going to get to heaven if I don't do what God tells me.

Anyway, I just went off on a rabbit trail... I've made my way back, though! As I was saying, one verse per week. It's really not that much. Of course, I like to draw parallels to other verses when I study. I would really love for you to join me in this study. You don't have to write your own blog posts about it. We can all have a wonderful discussion in the comments of the post. I believe you can subscribe to the comments by e-mail.
