Teach Them Diligently Unto Thy Children

I am pretty sure that every Christian parent or every Christian who desires to be a parent some day knows that teaching their child about Jesus, God, the Bible, and the Church should start early. Getting your roots in deep is so important. We know that the Bible stresses teaching our children all throughout the day no matter what we are doing.

“And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” Deuteronomy 6:7

I am always looking for new things to help making learning about the Bible fun at home with Benjamin. I wanted to take a little time out to share with you a few things that we have found that have really been fun and have helped us, and most importantly that Benjamin loves, and also ask you what sorts of things you use!

1. AP Reader Series: Learn To Read

Thumbnail

My mom bought all 6 of these books for Benjamin while we were in Memphis. So far he has really enjoyed them. He has the Goose, Moose, and Mongoose book memorized and I am pretty sure he is about to have the Dogs, Frogs, and Hogs one memorized as well because that seems to be his second favorite. Anyway, It talks about different qualities of each of the animals, but most importantly talks about God creating the animals and tells which day they were created on. Benjamin really loves these books! If your kid is very interested in reading books plus animals, I would definitely recommend these! You can look at them here.

2. AP Creation Cards

Thumbnail (1) Thumbnail (2)

We have had these for a long while, actually. Benjamin has been looking at these since he was a year old and he still loves to look at them. Basically, they are cards which have pictures on them (The Creation ones have things like trees, grass, water, etc; the Animal Kingdom ones have dogs, cats, horses, fish, etc) and the names of whatever is pictured as well. On the back, it has information about whatever is pictured and talks about God creating them and on which day. These used to be really good in services to keep Benjamin quiet and content, but now he sometimes likes to tell me all about the card so the quiet isn’t always achieved there. Ha! You can check these out here and here.

3. Each Little Dewdrop

Each-Little-Dew-Drop-new

This is a CD that we got last year at the Lectureship but didn’t really start listening until a few months ago (mostly because I left it at a friend’s house who lived in a different state). It has songs on it that cover a variety of topics all throughout the Bible, starting with the Books of the Old Testament and going all the way through to Eutycus and then some! Benjamin absolutely loves this CD and rumor has it that Reagan is a big fan as well! Benjamin’s favorite happens to be the song about the valley of Dry Bones and Ezekiel. And I have to admit that even I have learned from these songs, so there you go! They are fun and catchy, and a capella as well! You can check this out here.

{By the way, I learned how to spell Deuteronomy flawlessly with this CD HA!}

4. Hannah’s Hundred

hannahshundred1

As you can see, Hannah’s Hundred is a CD of 100 verses of scripture in [a capella] song. We just got this CD at the lectureships this year. There are more than one volume but this is the one that we have. They are very fun songs which makes for a fun way to learn scripture together. We have not listened to this one all the way through yet because all Benjamin ever wants to do is listen to Each Little Dewdrop but it’s all good. What we have listened to we have liked! You can check out this CD here.

-----------------------

We have a few other things too and maybe at another time I will get those written down as well for y’all. Anyway, those are the four things we have used a lot recently. So tell me what you use. Do a blog post if you’d like! What is it that you use with your kids that you all have really enjoyed?

Show Us Your Life : Current Reads

It has been a really long time since I have participated in Show Us Your Life over at Kelly’s Korner. But I have recently {in the past few months} started reading a whole lot again {thanks to a super exclusive book club my mom set up which includes her … and me}, so books are pretty much on my mind. I’ve always been a book worm, but since Benjamin was born I started having less time to read. I’ve made the time though and I love to settle down at the end of a long day just me and a book and some fluffy pillows.

So, currently on my bedside table… {or other places throughout the house… you know what I mean}…

Book 3 in the Anne of Green Gables series. Mom chose to read this series so we have been working our way through the books. I read them years and years ago and reading these I was reminded why I always wanted to be an author when I grow up {and maybe I still could be some day when I’m not changing diapers or cleaning up messes or playing blocks}. I love it, I love it, I love it. It really is a book for all ages. It’s funny and sad and romantic and descriptive and imaginative… it isn’t modern and I love that because I’m not really into modern-day fiction. {I mean, my favorite book ever is Gone With the Wind!}

The next books I am reading are Bible study books and the like.

“A daily Bible workbook, a personal growth manual, a practical application of Bible examples and a letter-writing course. What can I expect to learn: how to get life-changing results from writing personal notes; what materials I need to serve and glorify God; why and how to send appropriate notes to the grieving-including caregivers, divorce victims, parents of handicapped children, disaster victims and the jobless; what to say when extending forgiveness --and asking for it; how to gain confidence by practicing proven methods.” – The Gospel Advocate

I have really enjoyed this book and am trying to become better at writing notes to people. I know it is very encouraging for me when I receive notes or emails of encouragement and I think we should all practice this! I have loved this study so far. Sister Jane McWhorter is so sweet and kind and it shows throughout this book.

“Looking for a Scripture-based book to put the music back in your marriage? Your good marriage can be better! For couples who want their marriages to meet their maximum potentials for happiness, this scripture-filled practical guidebook is a must-read.  Chapters address adultery prevention, finances, intimacy, respect, leadership issues, and more.” – Colley Books

I have a few books by Cindy Colley and I have mad love for her as a Sister and I have loved hearing her speak. This has been such a great book so far and I’ve only just begun. I am looking forward to this study and Carl is even reading along with me. I am sure it will be very useful to me! I am so not a perfect wife!

{PS – You can check out Cindy’s blog here! If you haven’t already, you really should!}

excited about the lectureship!

I didn't blog yesterday because I knew if I did, it would just be completely negative. It was just one of those Mondays. Benjamin hasn't really wanted to go down for naps recently, which has been frustrating because he needs them desperately, usually twice a day. He's also teething like crazy right now, and I'm pretty sure he is suffering from allergies just like his mama. I am not crazy about pollen, like, ever. My nose itches just thinking about it! I have been sneezing since Saturday and it is awful!

I refuse to let this pollen season kick me down, though. I am putting my foot down right now. And that includes resorting to allergy medicine that will make me feel worse than I actually am. Ain't gonna happen. Body and I are just going to have to deal with it the best we can! {Any tips?? - Homeopathic remedies are so very welcome, also for Benjamin!}

On top of all this, I have been doing laundry. Not so much today, but just recently. Next week we are out of town, so I need clean laundry to pack away for me and Benjamin and hubby. I can't express how excited I am to be able to go to the MSOP Lectureship, my fourth year in a row! And I want to go ahead and invite anyone who lives within driving distance to come if you can! You won't regret it. Hearing God's word spoken plainly and lovingly by many different, talented speakers... I always leave feeling so uplifted and edified. The topic of this year's Lectures is "Shadows of Good Things" - if you click that link it will take you to the whole brochure.

Now, if you are unable to come to the Lectureship, but wish to experience it along with us, you can visit the Online Academy of Bible Studies during the days next week to hear the lectures streamed near live! Unfortunately, the Women's classes won't be streamed on the internet. Oh how I wish you could hear the lessons by women such as Cindy Colley {you can visit her blog by clicking her name}, Jane McWhorter, Irene Taylor, and one of my teachers from the Wives' Class at MSOP, Annette Cates.

Before we leave next week, I'll add links to the sidebar to the OABS archives so you can be reminded to tune in!

Just for my reference, if I have any friends who are planning on attending, link up here!

Bling, bling!

Hello friends! I can't believe tomorrow {in 15 minutes} is Saturday. I am dead tired but I wanted to crank out one post before I head off to bed. I have much to do tomorrow but I needed to say this first.

I used to wear jewelry before I had Benjamin, but I'm sure you can guess why I've mostly stopped. However, as Benjamin is older and more 'teachable', I've started slowly incorporating more pieces every now and then. Today I came across this site, ChunkyBling.com. I was looking around and really think a lot of the jewelry -- excuse me, Bling -- is really pretty! I loved the Wild Thing style of the interchangeable beaded watches. Purple is so my color! If you're into chunky jewelry, you should check out the interchangeable charm necklaces. They kind of remind me of a ring I used to own with an interchangeable bead that you snap in and snap out. It matched everything {does anyone else remember these?}! I imagine these charm necklaces would work the same way ... and to me that ultimately means that you're saving money by not going out and buying a ton of different necklaces to match a ton of different outfits. They also offer an Online Jewelry Party that you can throw with your friends - virtual and "real life" alike - and you get a lot of free jewelry with that. I attended something similar before and it was a lot of fun ... if any of you decide to host one of these, do let me know!

Anyway, I just wanted to share that with you all! I hope you all have a fantastic Saturday!

This is a post written in response to this offer.

It's Paw-ty Time!

Today is Mariah's birthday party, and we are so excited to go and celebrate her turning One with her! Tomorrow is her actual birthday, but we are going to celebrate it today at her birthday "Paw-ty", as the invitation said! If you can't tell, it has a puppy theme!

I also wanted to make mention of my new button over there on the right side of the page. Feel free to update the one you took, if you have taken one, or to take it if you haven't! Check out my Links page, and please if you have a button and I don't have it up, let me know so I can add it!

So, I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! It's quite possible that I will be bowling tonight. Hopefully I won't embarrass myself (though, I don't see how I couldn't... I am the world's worst bowler.)!

{Almost} A year in review!

My baby boy is turning ONE on Tuesday. I can't believe it! I am so happy to have come this far, but so sad because my baby boy is growing up! Tonight was so funny at church, all the little kids were running around playing tag, and right behind them little Benjamin toddling after them, wanting to join in on the fun. It was so very precious. He loves to walk and there is no stopping now.

I just can't get over it though. So much has happened. Actually I took some time to put together some of the blog posts that were significant to me during this past year. You don't have to go through all of them. To read all the significant things that happened in this past year:

About My Layout

Yes, it's true. I designed my blog myself. I didn't do it alone, though.

The font for my blog post headers, sidebar headers, and blog post dates I got from http://kevinandamanda.com/fonts/fontsforpeas/ - Currently I am using Pea Carrie Script

I used digital scrapbooking kits from http://www.shabbyprincess.com

I used the program free Gimp (www.gimp.org) for my header.

This is a sort of hobby of mine. I don't do any of this to gain money for myself as I use free elements to put it together. I am still learning the ropes, but if you'd like me to try to create one for you, e-mail me @ bringingupbenjamin@yahoo.com and we'll talk about it. I will probably only be able to do one at a time, as I am super busy with Benjamin and my house, if there are any who are interested.

I would be more than happy to give pointers or tips or advice. Just e-mail me!

Other blogs I have designed:

- {My Blessed} Life in Three-Six-Five - My Photoblog
- Hey Good Lookin' - My Recipe Blog
- The Adventures of Benjamin and Mariah - Ben and Mariah's blog
- Held - Gina's Blog
- A Preacher's Life - Hubby's Blog
